Smaller pickup trucks, like the new Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma, are all the rage these days, as shoppers are finally jumping on the bandwagon. We don’t blame them. The Tacoma and Frontier are incredibly versatile, do-it-all vehicles, offering SUV-like utility that even diehard truck purists can’t argue with. Best of all, you don’t need to hand over a Scrooge McDuck-sized bag of gold to buy one.
Which of these highly rated pickups is best? Which truck is the cheapest? Which one offers more space? Let’s compare specs and features so you can make a wise decision at the truck dealership.
Best Price: Nissan Frontier
It’s more practical to grab the keys to a Nissan Frontier if you’re looking to buy a new truck on a budget.
The 2019 Frontier is the cheapest truck in price, as the Frontier S model can be had for $19k, while the base Toyota Tacoma starts at over $25,000. With the extra $6,000 in savings, you could even bump up to an upgraded Nissan Frontier SV with a V6, satellite radio, a sunroof, sliding bed extender, spray-on bedliner, dual-zone climate, heated seats, and an automatic-dimming rearview mirror.
At the top of the trucks’ off-roading lineup – the Nissan Frontier PRO-4X® vs. Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro – price differences are even more apparent. The Frontier PRO-4X has an MSRP of $33,530 while the Tacoma TRD Pro has a starting price of nearly $43,000. A $10k difference is quite substantial, especially considering the trucks’ similar range-topping, off-road features, like thick skid plates, Bilstein® shocks, and electronically locking rear differentials.
Better Fuel Efficiency: Tie
On the gas-guzzling front, the Frontier and Tacoma are similar. Returning 19 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway, the Nissan Frontier is slightly more fuel-efficient than the Tacoma (18 city/22 hwy mpg). A gallon of gas saved here and there would certainly be enough for an extra night on the town.
Features: Nissan Frontier
Most people don’t buy trucks for the creature comforts, which is why automakers like Toyota and Nissan don’t make trucks with tons of amenities. However, the Frontier and Tacoma do differ a bit in this department.
For instance, the 2019 Nissan Frontier includes a few features that the Tacoma doesn’t, such as an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, 4-way power-adjustable passenger seat, the Utili-track® Channel System with 4 adjustable tie-downs, heated front seats and seatbacks, fully automatic lights with delay-off functionality, headlight washer, heated side mirrors, and a 10-speaker sound system with amplifier.
The Tacoma isn’t without its list of exclusive features, however. When comparing the Tacoma Limited to the Frontier SL, the Toyota truck includes the following: Smart key/proximity key, 2 LCD display screens, daytime running lights, LED brake lights, and a handful of advanced safety technologies.
More Space: Nissan Frontier
With regards to front space, both the Tacoma and Frontier are comparable, with the Tacoma narrowly besting the Frontier in front hip room (57.2 inches to 55.8 inches).
However, rear passengers will feel more comfortable in the Nissan Frontier. Headroom, legroom, and hip room come in at 36.6 inches, 25.4 inches, and 55 inches, respectively. The Toyota Tacoma provides 34.9 inches of rear headroom, 24.6 inches of rear legroom, and just 51.7 inches of rear hip room.
The Frontier also has a cargo box that’s a bit more accommodating. Its floor width maxes out at 61.4 inches, beating the Tacoma’s 56.7-inch width.
Max 4-Cylinder Towing: Nissan Frontier
As you likely know, trailering capacity is an important spec to look at when you’re choosing a truck. With the Frontier’s standard 4-cylinder – a 2.5L DOHC 16-valve 4-churner – you can tow a max of 3,810 lbs (SV King Cab model). That’s more than the standard 3,500-pound towing limit on the 4-cylinder Toyota Tacoma S. And when you get into V6 territory, the Frontier is just 110 pounds shy of matching the Tacoma’s 6,800-lb. towing capacity.
